Origin Story Sourced from the lush Bensa region in Ethiopia’s Sidamo zone, this coffee flourishes at altitudes between 1900–2100 meters, ideal for developing its distinctive character. The Bona washing station, nestled in the village of Bona, collaborates with around 400 nearby farmers, each working plots between 1 to 2 hectares in size.
Surrounded by semi-forest and garden vegetation, these farms benefit from fertile red soil that contributes to the coffee’s vibrant flavour and aromatic complexity. The predominant cultivars — Welisho and Dega — are handpicked and carefully sorted before undergoing traditional processing at the station.
The journey includes pulping with the classic Agaarde Discpulper, followed by meticulous density grading. Only the finest cherries advance to a 72-hour wet fermentation, then a density-based channel washing and a final six-hour soak in clean water.
This close-knit network of farmers and Bona’s refined processing have steadily elevated both technique and quality. The result is a coffee that embodies the rich heritage of Bensa and the celebrated vibrance of Sidamo — layered, expressive, and unmistakably Ethiopian.
